Service and Life Before the Boer War: William was born in the parish of Northwood near Newport on the Isle of Wight, England. On his enlistment he was shown as a labourer. He had been serving in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment since he had turned 15.

Details of service in war: Took part in the relief of Ladysmith, in the fighting at Rooi Kopjes, 24 July 1900, attack at Bergendal kopje. In March 1901 he took part in a night raid on Kruger's Post, which was entirely successful. In April the battalion was put into a column under General W Kitchener, and for the next three months did much hard marching, chiefly north of the Delagoa Railway. About the end of July 1901 the battalion took over a number of posts about Middelburg and garrisoned these for a long period.
Service and life after the Boer War: Following 12 years regular service including being stationed in Egypt in 1905 he was discharged from the British Army 11 Feb 1913 and migrated to Australia. He was a labourer in Kiln St Portland, NSW. He enlisted in the AIF as No 952 in 1 Bn in 1914. He landed at Gallipoli on the first day. At some point between the 25 and 30 of April 1915 he received a severe gunshot wound to the leg. The leg turned septic and he was sent to England to recover. He was returned to Australia on 8 August 1916 and was discharged in Sydney as medically unfit for further service 17 October 1916. He reenlisted in the AIF Special Service Unit as no 86286 on 9 September 1919. He deployed overseas to the AIF Guard Force in Egypt 17 September 1919. He returned to Australia on the Konigan Luise on 24 February 1920 and was discharged. He was later granted TPI status.
