Reasons to go and fight: Likely family military association. Sam's father - Charles George Norris - had served in the Soudan expedition and was given the rank of Major in the NSW Volunteer Permanent Staff from 1885 to 1899. His younger brother Charles Tucker Norris also served and may have enlisted prior to Sam given that he (Uncle Tucker) served in the 1st NSW Mounted Rifles which pre-dates the NSW Imperial Bushmen.

Details of service in war: May 1900 - May 1901 in Rhodesia and west Transvaal including capture of de la Rey's convoy and guns at Wildfontein (24 March 1901).

Service and life after the Boer War: According to his wedding notice (8 June 1909) he was by then a lieutenant colonel of the Kings Regt. having been adjutant to the 5th South Staffordshire Regt. He commanded 1 Bn Kings Regt. in 1916, 4 Bn Kings Regt. in 1918. He was GS Northern Command in 1919 and retired in 1924, then raised and commanded the 1st Gloc. Home Guard from 1940 to 1943.
