Details of service in war: December 1899-December 1900 in Cape Colony, Free State, and Transvaal

Service and life after the Boer War: Lieutenant-colonel in command of 5th Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps, Gallipoli (6th April 1915) He was responsible for all medical arrangements at the battle of Aeurhaix. Western Front France. Principal Medical Officer of Commonwealth Forces in New South Wales. Received the Colours from His Majesty the King for the Australian Army Medical Corps. Founder and Chairman St. John's Ambulance Brigade (Sydney Centre) Founder of the Royal Life Saving Society (1904) Foundation member and Executive committees of the State Division of the British Red Cross Society. Empowered and visited New Caledonia for the Jubilee, General of the Commonwealth. Established the medicinal gymnastic department at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.  (The department later became known as the Physiotherapy Department.) Honorary Medical Officer. He introduced the Swedish system of physical education into New South Wales schools. The first medical inspector of schools in NSW. The Commonwealth delegate to visit Berlin as the Commonwealth Delegate to the International Congress of Hygiene. Founder Australian Association for the Advancement of Science President of the Permanent Medical Referee Board (1917).
