Details of service in war: Embarked at Port Adelaide on 9 February 1901, called at Albany and Capetown and disembarked at Port Elizabeth 23 March. They proceeded to Kroonstad and joined Colonel De Lisle's column. When the 6th SAIB arrived in April both contingents were combined into a single regiment under the command of Major Shea, Indian Staff Corps. By this time the 5th had already trekked 465 kilometres on operations. The Divisional commander was Maj Gen E Locke Elliott. They operated mainly in the North East of the Orange Free State. Sergeant Major Schumann was Killed in action at Venterspruit about 40 kilometres south west of Standerton in the Orange Free State on 16 May 1901.
