Details of service in war: The 4th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade sailed from England about 15 December 1901, and after their arrival in South Africa took part in the closing scenes in the Orange River Colony, when the infantry held the lines and the mounted men did the driving.

Service and life after the Boer War: He married Annie Hanna in County Down Ireland they had two children. In 1912 John and Annie shaw sailed from England on the SS Waimana and arrived in Sydney on the 29 August 1912 with their two children Lillan and William. He enlisted for WW1 as #3012 Pte John Shaw 54 Bn AIF on 16 May 1916. He served in France for about two years reaching in rank Corporal 0n 1 November 1916. He was badly gassed and seriously wounded in the face. He endured seven operations and continuous treatment for the rest of his life. He worked on the railway at Eveleigh workshops as a fitter and labourer for 33 years. He and his family lived at Enfield until his death in 1950, Annie died on year later in 1951.
