Personal Characteristics: John Lumley had only been a member of Lismore half Squadron of the Lancers for a short time when he volunteered to serve with the third Lancer Draft.

Reasons to go and fight: A serving Lancer.

Details of service in war: Trooper Lumley served with the Lancers from the Ventersberg Road engagement until the squadron left the field at Wiktop. May - December 1900 in Free State, and east Transvaal; with French's cavalry division including sweep to Heidelberg (October 1900).

Service and life after the Boer War: After his return from the war he joined the NSW Police Force. He married Alice Young at Lithgow and had two children Dorothy and John. He was serving with the Police at Broken Hill when he died on 21 May 1919. (MJ Buckley Sword and Lance, Lismore 1988, p240)
