Details of service in war: lance corporal C.D. Hayes no. 689. was in the 2nd N.S.W. Mounted Rifles. The contingent left Sydney 15/03/1901. Contingent consisted of 33 officers and 673 other ranks, together with 700 horses. The contingent disembarked at Port Elizabeth on 17/04/1901. 2 officers and 23 other ranks were killed or died during opperations. The 2nd N.S.W. Mounted Rifles saw opperations against General's De La Ray, Kemo, Potgeitiers and Vermaas. The contingent served under Major General Fetherstonhaugh. Main engagements "capture of Gen. Potgeitiers convey at Vaal 24/5/1901.
