Service and Life Before the Boer War: Born as fifth son of John Stewart Merrillees and his wife Elizabeth. Attended Melbourne Church of England Grammar School where he excelled in sport and was a cadet Lieutenant in 1900. He had gained admission to medicine at Melbourne University but chose instead to volunteer for South Africa.It is possible that he initially volunteered for 5VMR but was not successful although successfully completing the tests due to numbers.His address on enlistment was Burwood Rd Auburn Victoria
