Details of service in the Boer War: He served from the 4 April 1901 to 17 May 1902 in the 6th Qld Imperial Bushmen during the Boer War in South Africa. He was slightly wounded at Mooifontein.

Life and Service after the Boer War:  He joined the Australian Imperial Forces on the 7 August 1914; serving in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment in Palestine. On the 15 November 1918 he reached the rank of Sergeant.
