Details of service in war: November 1899 - October 1900 with 1 SAMR in northern Cape Colony, Free State and in east Transvaal Was regarded as the owner of the Landseer Newfoundland 'Nelson' the mascot of 1SAMR. March 1901 - March 1902 with 5SAIB in Free State including defence of Graspan where five dead (6 June 1901) and charge at Grootvlei (2 August 1901).

Service and life after the Boer War: After the war became a prison warder in Adelaide and married. Served in 10th Infantry (Militia) as a Sgt Major.Lived in Victoria Park,Mile End and Hackney, South Australia. Enlisted in WW1 as no 1035 C/Sgt 16 Bn AIF served at Gallipoli and was wounded appointed 2Lt 29 July 1915. Served in France Prom Lt 20 January 1916. He was seconded to the ANZAC Provost Corps as a Capt 1 January 1917 and was OC ANZAC Corps Field Punishment Compound. Is regarded as having a much more enlightened view of Field punishment than his British Counterparts.
