Details of service in war: April 1900 - April 1901 as part of Vialls' 3rd Bushmen Regt in Rhodesia under Carington, west Transvaal including skirmish at Koster River where six killed (22 July 1900), and under Plumer in northern Transvaal including battle of Rhenoster Kop (29 November 1900), great De Wet hunt including charge at Wolwekuil (14 February 1901) and advance on Pietersburg.

Service and life after the Boer War: Returned to Australia: June 1901 on the Morayshire. Was a Civil Servant living at Northcote Victoria and unmarried in 1914. Joined the AIF on the outbreak of World War 1, commissioned with the rank of Captain in 5 Pioneer Battalion, served in France, promoted Major, Mentioned in Despatches, awarded the DSO was wounded and returned to Australia on 23 February 1917 on the Karoola. Promotion to Major was of a temporary nature and ultimately relinquished when he returned to Australia, by tradition, having worn the rank in the field, he would be entitled to use it in perpetuity.
