In 2008, we started to raise funds, the Memorial was not then a Designated Gift Recipient (DGR) meaning the Australian Taxation Office did not grant a deduction for those contributing. When DGR status was achieved on 11 August 2009, donations increased. A key means was to encourage descendants to register their ancestors with the Association, thus giving them a connection to the conflict and an incentive to get behind the project.
As the true cost of the monument emerged, the $4M required was at sometimes seen as a "bridge too far" by many.
The task did not daunt the National Committee, assistance was sought from Michael Crouch AO. Michael was a man who brought the strategy that enabled the target to be reached. Well almost, the Australian Government chipped in the last $1.7M to make up the shortfall and ensure the magnificent memorial was completed.
A great economic tribute to those who so long ago when their democratically elected governments said you are needed, said YES, take me, I will go. They started a tradition of service that saw our nation lose more per capita in WW1 than any other nation ensuring the survival of our democracy; that saw our island continent defended in WW2 against an enemy intent on genocide; and sees our nation today stand for the World's oppressed.
