Details of service in war: Camped at Kitchener's Kop near Newcastle, Natal. Involved in escorting Boer delegates from the east to peace negotiations at Vereeniging. Returned to Australia on the Drayton Grange embarking 11 July 1902.
Service and life after the Boer War: Enlisted as No 423 D Coy, 2
nd Battalion AIF and was listed as a Railway employee. Served on Gallipoli where he was evacuated with serious gastro enteritis. In France he served at Pozieres and received gunshot wounds to the head and shoulder. In 1917 having returned from hospital he was evacuated to hospital with Trench Fever. He returned to Australia in 1918 as he was an early enlistee and still suffering medical problems
