Details of service in war: Enlisted on the 26/11/1899 and discharged 9/11/1900. Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry was to become famous in the course of the war, was raised at Pietermaritzburg by Major A W Thorneycroft of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. The unit fought at Spion Kop and in many engagements across Transval and the Orange Free State in 1900.

Service and life after the Boer War: He remained in South Africa after the war and went into minining. He may have been there in that capacity before the war.
