Details of service in war: In December 1900, the New Zealand government agreed to replace the First contingent and provide 300 men to reinforce the other contingents. Later, after men of the Second and Third Contingents had protested about the length of their service,it was decided that this new Contingent should replace the first three New Zealand Contingents. The Sixth Contingents arrived in South Africa in March 1901. The Sixth Contingent [No 16 Company is pictured here] sailed from Auckland in January 1901 and arrived in South Africa in March. It operated in the Transvaal where is assisted the British forces in interning Boer civilians in concentration camps. A New Zealand soldier noted that such work was one of the saddest he performed in South Africa.
