Service and Life Before the Boer War: Labourer, joined 3rd Battalion Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) on 8th November 1895 and served until 29th March 1899 when he purchased his discharge. Service number was 4653. Then he joined the 1st Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers at Hastings, Sussex and was with them until January 1901. On 3 January 1901 he joined the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment at Hastings and was given a new service number, 8458.

Details of service in war: He served in South Africa from 23 January 1902 until 15 June 1902 when he went to St Helena until 11 September 1902.

Service and life after the Boer War: Served until 1907, then rejoined the Royal Sussex Regiment on 12 October 1914, was given a new service number, 2688. He was discharged as unfit on 10 July 1916 and was awarded the Silver War Badge. He rejoined the Royal Sussex Regiment on 10 April 1921 during the Irish Emergency and was discharged 6 July 1921.
