On 3 January 1901 he joined the 3^rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment at Hastings and was given a new service number, 8458.

He was discharged as unfit on 10 July 1916 and was awarded the Silver War Badge. He rejoined the Royal Sussex Regiment on 10 April 1921 during the Irish Emergency and was discharged 6 July 1921.
