Personal Characteristics: He was a horse breaker from Bet Bet Victoria. He was the son of Hugh Hughes and Mary Ann Hughes [nee Salter]. Height 175 cm.

Details of service in war: April 1900 - April 1901 in Rhodesia under Carington, west Transvaal including skirmish at Koster River where six killed (22 July 1900), and in northern Transvaal including battle of Rhenoster Kop (29 November 1900), great De Wet hunt including charge at Wolwekuil (14 February 1901) and advance on Pietersburg.

Service and life after the Boer War: He joined the Victorian Police Force as Constable #4998 on the 7 January 1902. He served in Russell Street,K yabram, Beechworth, Benalla, Omeo, Glen Wills, Macarthur, Hamilton, Cavendish[1914-1918], Edenhope, Merimo, St Kilda Road [1902- 1924] and Seymour [1924-1939]. Left the Police Force 15 November 1939 and put on a pension. Promotions: Senior Constable 1 September 1922, Sgt 2nd Class 7 May 1928, Sgt 1st Class 1 March 1932. He married Lillian Louisa Kinsella in 1904, he died in Coburg 4 september 1955 and Lillian 14 May 1963.
