Personal Characteristics: Jim was an expert axeman and won many wood chopping events. He also won many organised fist fights. He was a good shot with a rifle and an excellent horseman. He was used to living in the Tasmanian bush felling timber and building roads.

Details of service in war: June 1900 - June 1901 in Free State and northern Transvaal including ambush at Zwartkloof (1 September 1900) and as part of 4th Imperial Bushmen Regt at battle of Rhenoster Kop (29 November 1900), in great De Wet hunt, in advance on Pietersburg including ambush outside the town where Sale killed (8 April 1901), and in advance into east Transvaal
Service and life after the Boer War: He married Mary Ann McGinty on 21 July 1905 and fathered seven children. He with his family moved to Victoria in the late 1920s. Two of his sons James and Leonard fought in WWII. His surviving grandchildren are Helen Nesbit, Donald Hyde, Joan Hogan, Josephine Woods, Ian Hyde, June Horsey, Roderick Shields, Jennifer Anderson.
