Details of service in war: By the time James's troop reached South Africa the war had ended and they were involved in some light duties for a short while. They did not leave Natal. They sailed home, having never fired a shot in anger. For the rest of his life, James had the nickname "Trooper".
Service and life after the Boer War: Returned to Australia 1 August 1902 on the Manchester Merchant. Returned to farming, married in 1925 and they had four children. James died in 1962.
