Personal Characteristics: He was son of James Bartley and Mary Ann nee Walker, and married Clarice Ida May Uren on 2 Feb 1897.
They had 2 children -
1. Violet Grace Bartley born 2 Sept 1897, Brisbane, but she died 7 Oct 1897 Brisbane.
2. Clarice Ivy Bartley born 1 Nov 1898, and I haven't found any more info for her, as the records don't go far enough.
His father James worked for the Customs House and ended up as Senior Landing Waiter in Brisbane, and James and his wife had 13 children, Herbert Wilfred being the 9th born.
his childhood home was a happy one judging by the following info on his father James -
"He was a happy-go-lucky sort, too good natured to become rich. He was a proud man, and was to be seen very often in a new suit of clothes. His next visit would be to the photographer, and his favourite words were, "To see how old Jim looked in his new suit", his hearty laugh finished the rest."
Brother of James was Nehemiah Bartley of Q'ld history.

Details of service in war: April 1900 - April 1901 in Rhodesia under Carington, west Transvaal including relief of Mafeking (16-17 May 1900), defeat at Koster River (22 July 1900) and defence of Elands River Post (4-16 August 1900), and under Plumer in northern Transvaal including battle of Rhenoster Kop (29 November 1900), and advance on Pietersburg,
Herbert Wilfred Bartley enlisted in the 3rd Mounted Infantry Contingent. Departed Brisbane 1 March 1900 on Duke of Portland & arrived Capetown 2 April 1900. Contingent served in Rhodesia, Transvaal, Pretoria, Orange Free State, Relief of Mafeking and with General Carringtons Column. He was promoted Corporal on 14 July 1900. The unit returned home on the transport Morayshire, departing Capetown 9 May 1901, arriving home in Sydney 7 June 1901. The Unit was disbanded 21 June 1901.
He re-enlisted and served in B. Squadron, 5th Australian Commonwealth Horse and departed Sydney on 22 May 1902 and disembarked at Durban, South Africa 18 June 1902. The war ceased before their arrival and the unit returned to Sydney on the transport Manchester Merchant, departing Durban on 1st July 1902 and disembarking Sydney 1 August 1902.

Service and life after the Boer War: Was on electoral roll of 1910 - not on subsequent roles. No other records available.
