Service and Life Before the Boer War: Hector Ambrose was Cab Driver for his father, Henry Ambrose Holmes who was a Coach Proprietor at Kingston (now Newtown) and Enmore. His mother was Ann Farrar, both his parents were born in England and came to Australia on the same ship in 1849, marrying later in Sydney.

Service and life after the Boer War: Hector Ambrose continued to work as a cab driver and painter after the Boer War. He was an Old Age Pensioner at the time of death aged 76 years. He was buried at Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood on 30 July 1943. He married Mary Gale in 1895 at Newcastle, NSW.
