Personal Characteristics: Prior to enlisting in 3rd Commonwealth Horse he was in the New South Wales Lancers and subsequently a Sergeant Major in 'E' Sqn Australian Horse. "Lieutenant George Gilbert Cory has been a station manager for the past 10 years in the New England district. He was born on the Paterson River 28 years ago, and is a son of Mr Gilbert Cory, one of the pioneers of the Paterson. He belonged to the Lancers some time ago, and until recently was a member of the Armidale troop of Australian Horse." [Sydney Morning Herald 25 February 1902]

Details of service in war: The 3 ACH did not see action, they arrived in Durban on 30 May 1902, proceeded to a campsite near Newcastle (Natal); and were camped there when peace was concluded on 31 May 1902.
