Personal Characteristics: Adventurous man - did not talk about the war often. Was a strict father but a good father. Brought up his three daughters alone from when the youngest was about three years old. Height: 1.74 m, weight: 69.4 kg (1915).
Reasons to go and fight: Enlisted with his brother (PHIllip Bayliss) for the adventure!
Details of service in war: April 1901 - April 1902 in Free State and East Transvaal including Boer breakthrough at Langverwacht (24 February 1901).
Service and life after the Boer War: Returned to Deniliquin and worked in the abattoirs for a time. He then went droving - droved down to the Grampians area in Victoria. Then enlisted in the AIF 17 August 1915, 8th Light Horse Regiment, 14th Reinforcement; served with the 4 Div Artillery in France. Discharged 1919. Purchased land through the soldier's settlement scheme just out of Deniliquin after WW1 and farmed for most of his remaining work life. Moved to Melbourne in his 60s.
