Details of service in war: March 1901 - March 1902 in east Transvaal and Natal frontier, including defeat at Wilmansrust where 18 killed and 42 wounded (12 June 1901), and successful intervention at Onverwacht (4 January 1902); heaviest casualties of any Australian contingent, at Wilmansrust suffered the costliest defeat. He was slightly wounded at Wilmanrust on the 12 June 1901.
Service and life after the Boer War: Became a master baker by trade. Married Jane. Put his age down and joined the AIF in 1916 (4 May 1916) service #6043, he was with the 5th Battalion and 23rd Machine Gun Company and 3rd Machine Gun Battalion. Wounded 19/4/1917 and 29/9/1918.
