Service and Life Before the Boer War: He previously served in the Royal Navy and in 1899 was a crew member of HMS Calliope in Apia Harbour, Samoa when a tropical cyclone hit the area and the Captain made a dash under full steam for the open sea, saving the ship and all the crew. He also served in the Fire Brigade (Port Adelaide).

Details of service in war: From March to October 1900 in the northwest Cape Colony, Free sate and Transvaal.

Service and life after the Boer War: The second South Australian contingent returned to Australia in two ships; Harlech Castle on 30 November 1900 and Tongario on 12 May 1901. I do not yet know on which ship Hood returned. Afret the war he was welcomed back to the Port Adelaide Fire Brigade. Alfred Hood married Anna Meta Margaretha Mattfeld on 25 April 1905 in Rodewald Villa, Grunthal (Verdun) S.A. Children: Lorna Meta Hood born 15 March 1907 at Mt. Gambier, SA and Archibald Alfred Hood 19 January 1909 at Hahndorf, SA.
