Awards/Decorations/Commendations: Queen's South Africa Medal with Transvaal, Orange Free State, Cape Colony, SA 1901 and SA 1902 clasps.

Personal Characteristics: The local paper said of him "Trooper Vickery was of good physique, a splendid horseman, a good marksman, and in every sense the true stamp of a soldier, and his manly character and sunny disposition won the respect of his comrades in arms."

Reasons to go and fight: Looking for adventure.

Details of service in war: March 1901 - March 1902 in Free State including defence of Graspan where five dead (6 June 1901) and charge at Grootvlei (2 August 1901). I have letters he wrote home to his sister Clara Mary Vickery [Mintaro] whom he was very close to. The letters tell of a hard life fighting the Boers. Served under De Lisle, and other generals. Because of his horsemanship he was utilised as a horse breaker.
