Personal Characteristics: His occupation before he joined the service was a Dentist. In 1897 he married Mary E Flint in Sydney and they had four children.

Details of service in war: From May 1900 in Rhodesia and west Transvaal. He was invalded home from South Africa arriving home on the 22 March 1901.

Service and life after the Boer War: Prior to WW1 he served as a Private with the 2nd Infantry Battalion. He had served as a Second Lieutenant with the 38th Infantry Regiment and on 11 December 1914 he passed his examination for Lieutenant. He was gazetted as a Lieutenant in the AIF on the 11 September 1915. While with 20 Battalion on the Western Front on the 14 June 1916 he was wounded by an exploding shell and died 20 minutes later while being taken to a Dressing Station. Pte A Leigh submitted a statement to the Red Cross at the end of that statement he said "The men were very keen on Lt Campling, they put a lot of work into his grave".
